I have Comcast for my Cable, Phone and Internet. The phone service is pretty cool because you can call anywhere and there are no long distance charges. It also has about every feature imaginable which can be good normally but I don't want their voicemail service. I love my phone system. It is a Panasonic with caller IQ that has a built in answering machine and I am more than happy with it.
Apparently the Comcast generic voicemail message clicks on when the lines are tied up if I'm on the phone and don't click over or somehow the lines are busy. About a week ago I realized I had 37 messages on it and some of them were more than 5 months old. So I decided to change the greeting and say something like this: Sorry, I don't check these messages please call back and try to reach us on our normal answering machine.
It was only this way for a week and I am totally regretting it. I have had quite a few people upset and confused. What do I do??
Do I give in and check both my answering machine and the voice mail?
Do I leave a message that's a little more clear and says something like: Hi it's the Lewis' You've reached us when our lines are tied up. You are welcome to leave a message although I don't check these messages often so if you don't hear from us you might want to call back.
I know this is a stupid thing but it is driving me crazy! What would you do?

Answering Machine Dilemma- What would you do?

Yeah, I think you're going to have to go with the revamped message. It helps the user understand more of what's happening. When the voicemail message instructed me to use your answering machine, I was like, OK that's cool.... but then when I realized I didn't know any other way to access your machine (and I was getting your voicemail by default) I was definitely confused. (Not that it takes much to confuse me sometimes.)
I know what you mean, though; I hate checking voicemail. Sometimes a good old fashioned answering machine is the best.
OH MAN! So I just realized this whole week my regular answering machine was not on. No wonder people were upset. EVERYONE WHO CALLED LAST WEEK GOT THAT MESSAGE!! Just my luck.
Oh my gosh... that makes so much more sense!
That is frustrating!! Can you not call comcast and have them deactivate it? That would drive me nuts also.
I'm going with the revised message. Comcast talks like it is a feature you have to activate if you want it. But that doesn't seem to be the case. We will try this and see how it goes...
