Running Gear

What happened to the days when all you had to do was throw on your Nikes and head out the door?

My addiction to running began around 11 years ago and I have not slowed down since. In the beginning it doesn't take long before you realize you cannot manage without eye protection, therefore my a visor became my first piece of gear. As soon as you start making true routs or any goals a watch becomes a must. I was fine with just those two items for many years until MP3 players were introduced and now I cannot live without the fun and convenience of my IPod Shuffle. Then over a year ago I started carrying my cell phone in case of emergencies (the Scottie seizure type).

My most recent addition was added when we moved to Chico, with beautiful Bidwell Park so close it is an absolute runner's paradise. Long gone are my days of running along the familiar neighborhood lakes and busy streets of Elk Grove. This beautiful 11 mile long lush park located in our new home is a dream to run in.

I had been enjoying it for several weeks until one day after about a half mile stretch with no one in sight I came across two large dogs. With a long stream that runs through the park between me and my home I only had a couple of options. I could turn around and run back about 1.5 miles to the bridge to get across the stream, cross the stream right there fully clothed or face the dogs. I realized when they started charging me it was too late. My heart was racing especially when the larger of the two stood on his hind legs and howled at me. I stood my ground and somehow got past. The next day I went shopping for mace. I had thought about owning some in the past especially with all the running I like to do but never had done it.

My new piece of equipment is a little convenient bottle of tear gas/red pepper spray that straps to the palm of my hand. I thought it would bug me but I am totally fine and run with confidence now. I also feel more secure when I see that strange man looking at me when I thought I saw him 2 miles back. Will I ever spray it?? Who knows? You may say "what about animal rights"? I say I'm for runner's rights!

On occasion I may also be seen with a GPS strapped to my upper left arm or pushing a jogger with Scottie inside and Keith on his bike following close behind. It is interesting how things evolve. I guess I can look at the bright side, I am running further and faster now than I have ever before... and I am prepared.

Holy crap! I'm headed to buy some mace right now. That is totally scary. I actually had a similar situation happen to me before---so why have I put off buying mace for my jogs? No more, I tell you. You have opened my eyes and I will procrastinate no futher. (Man, this is sad---since it's still rather early, but I think it's past my bedtime because I'm acting like a nerd.) Melissa, are you embarrassed I'm your sister? Anyway, Amber I totally appreciate the advice. I should also thank you for inspiring Melissa to run---who has then inspired the women in our family to run. Good post.

A- Maybe you can give us some advice on the next piece of "gear" that we all need. We are starting to need an easy and light way to carry water with us. We are all running over an hour at a time now, and supposedly that's when you should carry water with you. We might want to stop a little short of Fergie's approach, though. (See my blog for photo.) Man, she's thirsty!

Amber,
Your so cute. You poor thing, I know how you just "love" dogs!! I bet you were so scared. I wonder what your next piece of running gear will be? Mark wants the NIke's with the Nano connected. You forgot to mention the cute little running shorts and wonderfully supportive sports bra!!

Stacy, I love that you feel comfortable enough to look and make comments on my blog!

Melissa, the best way to get water on a run without having to carry it is freezing bottles fully or half way and driving out the night before and placing them on your route. You can even kill two birds if you use your odometer to track your route then. If you do a Gatorade just hide it good so no one will snatch it. (that happened to my sister-in-law once)

Meg, Breton & Jen have the IPod Nike chip. I would love to get it. The problem is you need the $100 Nikes, the $30 chip and $200 Nano. Not going to happen any time soon!

Some day there will be an GPS IPhone that is small enough to carry on a run.

This happened to me! I was walking very early mornings in my neighborhood and stumbled upon a stray dog helping himself to someone's trash can contents. Everything was okay until we made eye contact. Then he charged. I am a dog-lover, but this experience scared the living daylights out of me. I ran home and vowed to get the pepper spray at the local Las Vegas spy store. I never did it. I stopped walking.

Thank you 24 Hour Fitness.
